Educational Sponsorship

The SULA Society has often supported local schools by either hosting students or visiting their schools. We now want to move this to a more formal program, it's clearly recognised by all involved in animal welfare and, in particular, dog rescue, that we need to educate the next generation if we are going to change the mindset and attitude to animals here in Mexico.

We have already established a program of school visits to start the education process. These visits stress the three fundamental changes that are needed:

NO to abuse,
NO to abandonment
YES to sterilization.

We take dogs to the school to show the impact of abuse, Malin, our star dog, who is disfigured due to having a firecracker set off in her mouth, Roo, abandoned as a puppy, and a distemper survivor. The ability for the pupils to interact with these dogs during the visit helps deliver these key messages.

The initiative is only just starting, but has already gained momentum with 3 school visits completed (see below) and requests from more schools being made as word spreads. The initiative is new, and we have plans and ideas of how to make the engagement meaningful:

1. School visit, a talk by Roy and Lisa focusing on the 3 key messages.

2. Puppy Care, look after a SULA Puppy (not real!), After each school visit, we want to leave a SULA Puppy for a week. During that week, the school needs to select one or more students to look after the Puppy and make a video diary, which must include the following mandatory activities:

Vet visit for vaccination
feeding
exercise
warm, comfortable, and safe place to sleep.

The videos will be posted on our website, and before the annual gala in November, we will hold an online vote to find a winner....

3. Spay and Neuter Clinic. Each school will be offered the option of hosting a Spay and Neuter clinic at their school, where they can encourage the students to work with their families to bring their pets for sterilisation.

These activities require time and money, but we believe that by working with the next generation, we can hopefully plant the seeds that will change attitudes toward dogs and improve the lives of dogs here in Puerto Vallarta. Below are the Educational Sponsorship options we are seeking your help with:

School Visit, to cover the cost of travel for the visit

Sponsor a school visit - $1,000 pesos

SULA Puppy, to buy the SULA puppies (not real)

Sponsor one SULA Puppy - $1,000 pesos

Spay and Neuter, to cover the costs of hosting a spay and neuter clinic and up to 30 animals:

Sponsor one spay or neuter - $500 pesos
Sponsor one clinic- $15,000 pesos
